Family Friendly Neighborhoods in Indianapolis

Indianapolis is a big city with many different neighborhoods to choose from. We love the entire city, but we thought it would be beneficial to breakdown some of the best family friendly neighborhoods in Indianapolis. We’ve based our list on things like schools, neighborhood safety ratings, parks, and other family-focused attractions. This list is by no means extensive and we welcome your input!

On the north side of town...

Carmel is located on the northwest side of Indianapolis just above 96th street. Known for it’s arts district and fine dining, it’s also a great place to raise a family. You’ll find parks galore and plenty of pedestrian trails throughout the area.

Fishers sits on the northeast side of Indianapolis starting at 116th street. This sprawling part of the city is well-known for tidy subdivisions and large open area parks. Learn more about their school system here.

Zionsville has a small town feel just 20 minutes outside of the big city. Great schools, delicious food, and local shopping...they have it all. Visit their website to learn more about the quality of life in Zionsville.

On the south side of town…

Greenwood is located just south of Indianapolis. It’s home to several parks, renowned medical facilities, and a top-notch shopping center. For more information about the Greenwood area, visit the city’s website here.

On the west side of town…

Avon is home to four star schools with nationally recognized marching bands. Avon is also the only Tree City USA in Hendricks County. Visit the Avon city profile for population, crime, and other statistics.

Danville is close to Indianapolis and has maintained its small town charm over the years. With great schools and thriving local businesses, Danville had to be on our list of family friendly neighborhoods in Indianapolis.

On the east side of town...

Irvington is a small neighborhood tucked away on Indy’s east side. It’s known for its unique architecture and ghostly past, but it’s an up and coming neighborhood that’s worth checking out. Cumberland Indiana is a small town located right off Washington Street just 20 minutes from downtown Indianapolis. You’ll find all the luxuries of living in a big city with the comfort of a small town. Visit the town website for more information about housing and local businesses.
