20 Packing Tips for a Smooth Move

There’s no getting around it—packing up a home is a headache! But an even bigger headache will ensue if you pack haphazardly. Follow the tips below to avoid major packing disasters!

  1. Get an early start. Begin by packing up nonessential (think knickknacks and artwork) and items not currently in use (like out of season clothes) a few weeks before your move.
  2. As you’re packing, sort out unwanted items and create a box for charity. It’s easier and more efficient to do this before you move than after.
  3. A couple of weeks before you move, arrange for a charity to pick up unwanted items. This will free up some precious time by eliminating trips to your local drop-off center.
  4. Pack an overnight bag for each family member with essential items (toiletries, pajamas, change of clothes, phone charger, child’s favorite stuffed animal etc.). This way, you won’t be digging through all of your boxes for items you’ll need right away.
  5. Pack your dishes vertically. Surprisingly, they are much less likely to break this way.
  6. Do not use newspaper to wrap fine china. Instead, use brown craft paper, clothing, pillowcases, or bubble wrap.
  7. Use specialty boxes for glasses and stemware.
  8. Pack your home up room by room. This way, you won’t be running all over your new house as you unpack and you can completely unpack and set up the most important rooms first.
  9. Label each and every box on the side and the top. Also include which way is up and note if the contents are fragile.
  10. Use different color markers to label the boxes for each room. Think blue for kitchen, red for living room, and so on.
  11. Tape boxes with PACKING tape, not duct tape!
  12. Pack heavy items in small boxes. Boxes full of dense items, such as books, get heavy fast.
  13. Pack lighter items, such as bedding, in larger boxes.
  14. Don’t worry about packing up drawers. Simply cover them with plastic wrap and move them intact.
  15. Take photographs of decor arrangements that you want to recreate in your new place.
  16. For items that you must take apart (i.e. mounted television, furniture), keep the screws and small parts in sandwich bags. Make sure to label each bag so you know what the parts are for.
  17. Pack liquid items in waterproof bags before placing them in boxes.
  18. Do not pack up important documents (passports, birth certificates, etc.). Instead, keep these records with you and move them by hand.
  19. When packing up tools, make sure to leave out a small toolbox full of the tools you’ll need right away in the new house.
  20. Consult owner’s manuals for all your large appliances to see if there are any specific moving instructions that need to be followed.
